Motorcycle Safety During the Summer Months

On Behalf of | Jun 27, 2023 | Motorcycle Accidents

Summer is an excellent time to hit the road on your motorcycle in Connecticut. However, during this time of year, you must also share the road with more travelers, both cars and motorcycles.

When more vehicles are out and about, more accidents happen. Ensuring you take proper safety precautions while riding is essential for preventing collisions and injuries.

Stay Alert

Drivers in cars may not see you on your motorcycle. To ensure your safety, you must pay full attention to the road and other vehicles. Make sure you are riding safely and do not drive impaired.

Check the Road Conditions and Weather

Look into the state of the roads before you head out. You want to avoid areas with debris, construction or other hazards. Monitor the weather to ensure good visibility and safe riding conditions.

Inspect Your Bike

Check your motorcycle to make sure everything is working correctly. Mechanical issues with your brakes, horn, tires, lights or other parts can result in dangerous or deadly accidents. Fixing problems before you ride helps prevent potential wrecks and injuries.

Wear Protective Gear

Although Connecticut laws only require motorcycle riders under 18 to wear helmets, it is a good idea for everyone who rides to wear protective headgear. This safety gear can significantly reduce the severity of your injuries if you are in a crash. Consider other items, such as reflective clothing, boots, a jacket, pants, gloves and guards for your elbows and knees to keep you safe on the road.

Although motorcycles only make up a small portion of registered motor vehicles, motorcyclists account for 14% of all traffic fatalities. However, riding your bike can be an enjoyable summer activity when you prioritize safety.
