State raises awareness about pedestrian accident potential

On Behalf of | May 16, 2019 | Firm News, pedestrian accidents

The weather is beautiful and summer is just around the corner. Many Connecticut families are on the hunt for some free fun and a day spent together. A new initiative provides exactly that, along with some helpful public safety information regarding the risk of a pedestrian accident

The program, named “Watch for me, CT” aims to raise awareness about the potential for a pedestrian accident. Especially in the summer months when children are likely to be outside playing, the risk of getting hit by a car is a very real concern. It is estimated that more than 1,500 people are hit by cars each year in Connecticut alone. Nearly 70 of these accidents ended in death last year.

In addition to driver safety, there are steps pedestrians can take to stay safe. For example, if one is approaching a crosswalk, he or she should still look both ways for traffic before crossing, just in case a driver is not paying attention. The program, which spreads the message through community events, aims to impress upon both adults and children the importance of pedestrian safety.

Connecticut takes pedestrian safety seriously, and the state makes every effort to raise awareness and provide safety features, such as designated crosswalks, to keep people on foot safe. If a person becomes the victim of a pedestrian accident, he or she may have to face medical bills, inability to work or attend school due to injury, and emotional trauma. In such cases, a victim may have legal recourse available to help ease the financial burdens that can be placed upon a victim in the aftermath of such an accident.
