Common causes of motor vehicle accidents

On Behalf of | Apr 27, 2015 | Car Accidents, Firm News

Connecticut drivers may want to learn more about a study released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that found that in 2012, over 2.5 million Americans went to the emergency room due to motor vehicle accidents. Based in part upon statistics compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the study revealed that more than 33,000 people died that same year in motor vehicle collisions. The CDC found that people over the age of 80, young adults and teenagers were most likely to be in accidents.

Some of the most commons reasons for crashes include speeding and distracted or reckless driving. In addition, driver fatigue is a particular problem. A 2013 study found that driving while drowsy is as dangerous as driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Despite this information and the role of drowsiness in a high-profile crash in June 2014 that seriously injured comedian Tracy Morgan and killed another passenger, the government is moving toward fewer protections against drowsy driving. There is some support in Congress to remove existing law regarding truck drivers and mandatory breaks. Driving while drunk or under the influence of drugs is another major factor in accidents. The National Organization for Youth Safety reported that around 33 percent of drivers aged 15 to 20 who were killed in crashes had a blood alcohol level of at least .08.

Those who are injured in a car accident caused by a driver who is impaired, drowsy or distracted may wish to consult an attorney. The recovery period from an accident can be lengthy, and the victim may be unable to work. Some car accident victims who are seriously injured may choose to file a personal injury lawsuit against the responsible driver.
