A man riding a motorized scooter was injured in a hit-and-run in Bridgeport on July 31. The man’s injuries were not life threatening, even though he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident. The driver of the scooter, who suffered a broken shoulder and was left unconscious at the scene of the accident, was asking the public to help him identify the driver who hit him.
Police reported that the accident occurred at the intersection of North Avenue and Parallel Street. The man was driving his scooter westbound on North Avenue when he was hit by a black pickup truck around 4 p.m. The collision occurred after the pickup truck driver changed lanes. It was unknown why the truck was not able to avoid the scooter and why the driver of the truck had decided to keep on going.
There are many reasons why hit-and-run accidents occur. Reasons can include distracted driving, speeding or driving under the influence. Some of these factors are violations that could be used to show liability on the part of the driver.
Drivers in hit-and-run incidents are not always located, but if the driver is identified, an injured victim might file a personal injury claim. Since the court must determine if the driver was liable and negligent for the claim to be successful, information from the police investigation can be used as evidence to show the defendant’s fault. A successful claim might mean awards for medical costs incurred by the victim for treatment of injuries suffered in the accident, for the victim’s pain and suffering, and for the victim’s lost income during recovery.
