Around 1:15 p.m. on June 3, three people from New Britain were crossing Christian Lane in Newington when a pickup truck ran into them. According to witnesses at the scene, the truck came out of nowhere, struck the young boy and two women, dragged them approximately 50 feet, and then just continued to drive away without ever braking.
One of the witnesses was driving by in a white van, saw the crash and tried to block the pickup truck from fleeing. The pickup driver ran into the van and then tried to reverse, but the driver of the van restrained him and dragged him back to the injured pedestrians so that they could help them.
The three pedestrians, ages 18, 23, and 43, were transported to a local hospital. According to police, the victims suffered cuts and broken bones, but their injuries were not life threatening. The 18-year-old was soon released, but the two women stayed for a while longer to recover from injuries that they suffered in the accident.
The driver of the pickup truck has been identified by police as a 32-year-old East Hampton man who was taken into custody, but no charges were immediately filed against him. There are no indications of any medical condition or intoxication and the man is cooperating fully, according to the local authorities.
Serious injuries can be the direct result of pedestrian accidents and can necessitate long hospital stays, extensive surgery and physical rehabilitation.
