Losing a loved one in an unexpected or untimely manner can create emotional and fiscal burdens for surviving family members. When this loss is believed to be the result of someone else’s negligence, it can leave families seeking answers. A fatal pedestrian accident is certainly one of these situations creating numerous questions, particularly if the driver fails to stay at the scene. Recently, a Connecticut woman was charged for her connection to a hit-and-run accident that killed a man.
The victim, a 36-year-old male from New Britain, was struck by a vehicle near Kensington. He was rushed to a local hospital for treatment, but unfortunately he didn’t survive. The driver deemed responsible for the incident reportedly stayed a short time at the scene of the accident, but left before police arrived.
A 60-year-old woman from Kensington was arrested at her home shortly after the crash. Charges against her include DUI, manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident. She has been released after posting a $50,000 bond and is waiting for her court date, which is scheduled in May.
In this case, the victim’s family is not only suffering an emotional loss, but may also be struggling financially due to the unexpected medical and funeral expenses. Along with the criminal charges this woman faces for the pedestrian accident, the victim’s family retains the right to pursue a wrongful death claim against her in a Connecticut civil court. While they are suffering a great loss, hopefully these cases — if a judgement is granted in their favor — can help give them a sense of closure and provide some financial relief for the losses they have endured.
