Drivers of cars are under obligation to safely and responsibly share the roadways with all kinds of other vehicles. From tractor-trailer drivers to bikers to motorcycle riders to those on foot, there are countless travelers of varying circumstances who share the road. Those who travel on foot in Connecticut may be at the biggest disadvantage, since they stand the greatest chance of being injured while walking on the street.
A 36-year-old woman in Berlin was recently walking on the shoulder of High Road in the evening hours. She was reportedly struck from behind by a 60-year-old woman. The woman who was struck was transported to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries, but she unfortunately succumbed to those injuries.
The woman who was suspected of hitting the pedestrian allegedly left the scene of the accident. She was reportedly discovered later and arrested at her home. In addition to the hit-and-run charges, authorities charged her with DUI.
Authorities are apparently still investigating the accident and have indicated that additional charges may be forthcoming. The biggest tragedy of this accident is that it truly was preventable, since someone’s negligent actions brought about the death of another human being. A family is likely left mourning their loved one who was fatally injured while walking on the street. Under Connecticut law, the family likely has the right to seek compensation for the grief and financial losses they have incurred because of this tragedy, which may include pain and suffering, loss of wages and loss of companionship.
