Safety Of Pedestrians Aged 60 And Older A Concern In Fairfield County

Connecticut has experienced an unusually high number of pedestrian accidents over the years, resulting in several deaths and serious injuries. When analyzing the data from the accidents in Fairfield County, officials found that pedestrians over the age of 60 were at increased risk for death or injury from these incidents. The National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTA), compiles information on pedestrian accidents. A recent review of this data showed that 31 of the 75 pedestrian deaths in Fairfield County from 2003 to 2012 were individuals 60 or older. This is a much larger number than was expected in terms of the elderly population. Officials have been working on plans to improve safety for Connecticut pedestrians of all ages.

Officials have recommended more pedestrian islands, dedicated bike lanes, and other road improvements. As the design of the roadways often contributes to pedestrian accidents, there is a need for improved pedestrian-oriented traffic controls and crosswalks throughout the state. Unfortunately, many local communities lack funding to make the necessary improvements, leaving our vulnerable elderly population at risk when walking the streets and sidewalks of their cities and towns.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a pedestrian accident, you should contact an experienced personal injury attorney as soon as possible to protect your rights. Your attorney will investigate your case, collect important evidence from witnesses at the scene and arrange for proper medical treatment and insurance coverage. Your attorney will also help you settle your claim with the insurance company to your advantage, not the insurance company’s.
