Evidence: what you need to collect after a car accident

On Behalf of | Dec 10, 2024 | Car Accidents

There are few moments in life as disorienting as immediately after a car accident, especially a serious one in which injuries are involved. Whether the injuries are minor or life-threatening, it is critical to collect evidence that could help you later on if you are entitled to receive compensation for the harm you have endured.

Here are the most important pieces of evidence you should gather:

  • Photos and videos of the scene from multiple angles, photos and videos of the vehicle(s) involved, the road area, as well as any physical injuries.
  • Document any damage to the vehicles involved, as well as any property, debris and skid marks.
  • Gather as much witness information as you can, including names, phone numbers, email addresses, home addresses and their take on what happened. Notes about the accident from these individuals are very important, so ask them if they would be willing to provide a statement of what they saw.
  • A copy of the police report, the report number and name of the officer, as well as their contact information, any citations issued or determinations of fault.
  • Once you seek medical attention for your injuries, keep all related documentation including your treatment plan, any bills you receive in the mail or anywhere, surgical plans and medical files, if you can.
  • Exchange the insurance information with the other driver(s) involved, but do not speak with any insurance companies unless your attorney tells you to do so.
  • Take a personal account of what happened. Your memory will be fresh and you will recall details better if you write it all down right after the accident.
  • If you have a camera in your vehicle, check to see if there is any recorded footage of the accident, which would be very helpful as evidence.

As you can see, car accidents are not only shocking to the body and mind– they are also potential situations where you will have to go to court for compensation.

In those situations, having evidence is critical. Remember that the other party may also have evidence, so having as much detail as possible is critical.

Of course, make sure you are safe and receive any medical care you need before trying to do anything else. Your health is the most important consideration in any car accident.
