5 hazards motorcyclists face

On Behalf of | Mar 27, 2023 | Motorcycle Accidents

Going out for a day on a motorcycle is a great way to enjoy some fresh air, but it’s one that comes with some inherent dangers. While most motorcyclists take pride in safe rides, they’re often at the mercy of other drivers on the road.

Keeping motorcyclists safe is the duty of all drivers. Understanding some of the more common hazards that motorcyclists face can help everyone to mitigate their risk of being involved in a crash.

Poor road conditions

Potholes, uneven surfaces, road debris and loose gravel can all pose significant hazards for motorcyclists. Hitting a pothole or encountering loose gravel can cause a motorcycle to lose traction, causing a potential crash. Stay vigilant and avoid these hazards when possible or slow down and navigate them carefully when they are unavoidable.

Weather conditions

Rain, snow, ice and strong winds can all make riding a motorcycle more dangerous. Wet or icy roads can reduce traction and visibility, while strong winds can make it difficult to maintain control of your motorcycle. If you must ride in inclement weather, be prepared with appropriate gear and exercise extra caution.

Limited visibility

Motorcyclists are often less visible to other drivers on the road, increasing the risk of accidents. Riding in another vehicle’s blind spot, having inadequate lighting or wearing dark clothing can further decrease your visibility. Make yourself more visible by wearing bright or reflective gear, using proper lighting, and being aware of other drivers’ blind spots. All other drivers must be watchful for motorcycles, especially in areas where they may be harder to spot, such as intersections.

Grass clippings

Grass clippings on the road can create slippery surfaces, significantly reducing traction for motorcyclists. This can lead to skidding or loss of control, increasing the risk of accidents. Anyone cutting grass should avoid blowing the clippings into the road.

Distracted or impaired drivers

Motorcyclists face a higher risk of accidents due to drivers who are distracted or impaired. These drivers may not notice a motorcyclist or react appropriately to their presence on the road. Stay alert and practice defensive riding to anticipate and avoid potential hazards created by such drivers.

The cost of care after a motorcycle crash is considerable. Victims are often able to sue an at-fault driver for compensation in order to offset their costs. Seeking legal guidance in the wake of a crash can help to ensure that victims are not burdened by losses that rightfully belong on another’s shoulders.
