Can you spot a reckless driver?

On Behalf of | Mar 24, 2022 | Car Accidents

A car accident can be a costly incident for the victim. When medical expenses can cost a victim thousands of dollars or more, it is important to do everything in our power to avoid these disastrous accidents. To help you avoid reckless and negligent drivers, here are five tips for spotting dangerous drivers:

Traffic violations

If a driver does a rolling stop at a stop sign or drives through a red light, they are more likely ignoring traffic laws than experiencing an emergency. It is also likely the driver is not fully aware of their surroundings.

Disregard for safety

A driver who does not yield the right of way to other drivers or pedestrians or does not respect safe driving distances by tailgating likely is not driving with safety in mind. It is possible that they may be distracted by something.

Using a cellphone

Texting, taking a call, or updating a GPS may all seem like a minor task while driving, but it can be the catalyst to a fatal accident. If you see someone using their phone while driving, you can trust that they are not giving their full focus to the road and cars around them.

Ignoring hazardous roads

Construction zones and poor weather create dangerous driving conditions. If you see someone driving without any regard for these threats, it is in your best interest to avoid these drivers.

Swerving

A driver who is unable to stay in their own lane or drive in a straight line may be the most dangerous sign of a reckless driver. Whether the driver is under the influence of drugs or alcohol or distracted by their phone or something else, they are potentially an extremely dangerous driver.

Trust your instincts

If you see someone on the road that you suspect of being a dangerous driver, follow your intuition and avoid them. Keeping your distance from dangerous drivers allows you to have more time to react to the accidents reckless drivers can cause. Be sure to keep an eye on the cars around you to look for signs of reckless drivers to protect yourself and your passengers in your case.
